Origin
The Lilium is a perennial plant belonging to the lily family, which includes about 100 species. Lilies grow widely in nature in both Europe, Asia and North America. Their greatest diversity is found in Asia, where dozens of species grow in China alone. Lilies are cultivated as ornamental plants because of their beautiful flowers. Therefore, a whole host of varieties, hybrids and cultivars are available, the number of which has already exceeded 8,000.
Characteristics
Lilies have large trumpet-shaped flowers with six petals arranged in two overlapping whorls, called sepals. The petals are usually vivid and come in a variety of colours, including white, yellow, pink, red, orange and purple. Some lilies also have spots or stripes on the petals. The size of lily flowers can vary depending on the species and variety.Lilies can reach different heights depending on the species and variety. Their standard height ranges from 60 cm to 150 cm. However, some varieties can grow up to 200 cm.
Care
To prolong the life of cut lily flowers, follow these simple care instructions:
- Remove leaves below the waterline: Submerged leaves can rot and shorten the vase life of the flowers.
- Use clean water and flower food: Fill the vase with clean water and add the provided flower food. This will nourish the flowers and inhibit bacterial growth.
- Cutting out the stamens to prevent pollen shedding
- Change the water regularly: Every two to three days, replace the water and flower food to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.
- Keep away from heat and direct sunlight: Extreme temperatures can cause the flowers to wilt and fade. Place the vase in a cool, shaded area.
Blooming time
In their natural habitat, different species of lilies flower at different times of the year. Some lilies flower in early spring, others in summer or even late summer to early autumn.
